Jurors perform a vital role in the American system of justice. Jury service is an important civic function, and it supports one of the most fundamental rights of individuals - the right to have the interests of justice reviewed and determined by fellow citizens. The Constitution provides that the “trial of all crimes, except in cases of impeachment, shall be by jury.” U.S. Const. art. III, §
2, cl.3. The right of trial by jury for civil actions is preserved by the Seventh Amendment to the Constitution, and the right of the accused in criminal prosecutions to trial by jury is protected by the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution. When a trial is before a jury, the judge decides only the law to be applied in the case and the jury decides the facts.
